Winged Freedom Raptor Hospital is the culmination of our founder’s lifelong veterinary career caring for birds. Dr. Kim Ammann graduated from the University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Veterinary Medicine in 1997 with a clear intention to work with avian species. After more than 25 years in small animal and avian practice, and with retirement approaching, her desire to continue treating wild birds remained as strong as ever.

The idea for Winged Freedom took shape several years before her retirement, when the original raptor hospital was established in her basement. Despite its modest size, the space was fully equipped with anesthesia, X-ray, and diagnostic capabilities. As patient numbers grew, the facility quickly outpaced both the basement hospital and the single outbuilding used for recovering birds. The need for a larger hospital and expanded recovery space became clear, prompting plans for a dedicated facility.

In 2021, Winged Freedom Raptor Hospital was formally incorporated, received tax-exempt status, and began fundraising efforts. Thanks to a generous matching grant from local philanthropists Dave and Carolyn Cleveland, construction of the new hospital and a large eagle reconditioning flyway was completed in 2022–2023. This custom-designed space allows us to care for a significantly larger number of raptors and provide specialized treatment tailored to their recovery needs. Winged Freedom has seen admissions grow to nearly 300 birds in 2025 alone.

In April 2026, Winged Freedom was excited to welcome a part-time veterinarian to work alongside Dr. Ammann, strengthening our ability to provide exceptional care for injured and orphaned birds of prey. Aside from this important addition, our organization remains entirely volunteer-driven, ensuring that the vast majority of donations are directed toward bird care while operating expenses are kept to a minimum. The dedication of our volunteers, donors, and supporters makes it possible for us to continue providing life-saving care to raptors throughout northwestern Wisconsin.
